Hey Everyone, I was wondering if anyone had advice on what is the best material for a mortar and pestle to be made out of, because I was at my local metaphysical shop and noticed that there were various choices some seemed better than others. There was once made of some type of stone, but it looked like dust would come off of the stone as you would grind herbs so I passed on that one. Then there was a completely wood one and I felt like it would be hard to clean and be more susceptible to damage so I passed on that one too. And the last one was some type of opaque crystal or granite but it seemed fine. Any suggestions or experience in using any mortar and pestles from these materials, and how they hold up/preform?

I have one made of granite, it’s awesome. I got it off Amazon for like $35. When you first get one made of granite you just have to grind up dry rice a couple of times until the grinded rice stops picking up discoloration, and then you’re good to go. No granite will get into what your grinding up after that.

If you want to make powders get a stone one. What prices did you see? Just curious. If you have an Asian / Indian (India) grocery store in your area head there for the best deal on them. Usually quite cheaper than at witchy shops.

If you’re worried about it lasting then go with a hard stone like granite and marble, if it’s just for spiritual reasons and not practical, then whatever calls to your or is your aesthetic

Go with the one that calls to you is my opinion
I personally use a granite one but that’s the one that called to me when I was looking for one

I too have a granite one that I have had forever. It’s awesome and I recommend it.

I like ceramic. It’s easy to clean and won’t absorb the oils. The smooth surfaces take a little practice but for quality you can’t beat it.

I have one made of marble and one made of granite, they both work great. Personally I like a molcajete because of the generous space.

I’ve had wooden ones in the past and I do not recommend unless you are using it for dry ingredients only.

Earlier this year, I got one that is ceramic and the pestle is wood at the top and ceramic at the bottom. So far, it works, though sometimes I have to use a good amount of pressure to grind things like peppercorns or mustard seeds.

I didn’t want one of those of the types you described where it looked like dust would come off of it, so I avoided those as well.

In hindsight, I probably should’ve gone with granite. It’s sturdy, durable and is probably easier to use for grinding things than my ceramic one. I think I was worried about expense and the weight at the time, which is why I didn’t go with granite.

I have a soapstone one and I love it. It’s super easy to clean, grinds all kinds of things, has metaphysical properties, is really pretty, and I can burn things in it. Perfect for all my needs.
