GuestMay 8, 2022 at 4:25 amIt’s cause of the various origins of the word. The modern “fairy” comes from old English “faerie” which comes from the old French “faierie”. Faerie got shortened to fae, which got spelled phonetically as “fey” or “fay”.
Meanwhile “the fair folk” comes from the various other things the fae are called, like “the little people”, and “the good neighbours”. None of these are really from the fantasy genre, just carried over from old myths and folk tales and mostly Celtic culture.

GuestMay 8, 2022 at 4:25 amI feel like it’s also a trick way around never using their ‘true names’ lest you call them up when speaking it.
