I’m still making my way through figuring out astrology to a fuller degree, and I’ve only just figured out the difference between whole sign and palcidus house placements. I know many people seem to prefer whole sign, however as far as I’ve read I’ve noticed something that makes me wonder how applicable each method can be to people.

Essentially, I did my partner’s chart and one thing that I noticed was difference in first house. Using the Placidus chart, his rising is cancer which, in my opinion, makes sense – he is quite sensitive and selectively open. Meanwhile, it claims his rising is Gemini in the whole house system, which while I can see some of those qualities, doesn’t feel right in my mind

Could it be possible that I’m misreading one of the charts? Or traits? Or that they’re both in their own ways applicable?

As others have said, the asc won’t change because of the house system you are using. If it’s cancer in placidus, it will be cancer in whole sign, at the exact identical degree. Note that in whole sign, the asc floats inside the first house. It is not set as the cusp of the first house. In whole sign, whatever sign the asc degree is in, then the first house is set at 0 degrees of that sign, and each subsequent house is set at 0 degrees of each sign. The MC also floats, though it can be in one of any of the upper houses, whereas the asc will be only in the 1st house (and dsc only in the 7th).

We aren’t allowed to post personal charts in this sub, but if you posted the two charts, with your question as stated, over on r/askastrologers, I’ll try to catch it and respond later (no promises hehe).

I do suggest you use [astro.com](https://astro.com), and go to the Extended Chart Selection page (you can find it under the Free Horoscopes tab at top of page, and then under the Calculations and Drawings heading inside that tab.

Just a general tip for whole sign: pay close attention to the traditional rulers of each house, their specific conditions by sign (dignity/debility), element, modality, house and by aspects, etc.

changing the house system will not change the ascendant. make sure you’re not miscalculating or changing any other settings.
