The Big 7 as you can call it (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) are called the personal planets because they display the aspects we are conscious of. Why do you think those are the 7 planets we can see with our naked eye? However on the other hand Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are called transcendental planets because they do exactly that. Their traits transcend what we as individuals are aware of in our everyday conscious mind. It goes beyond that. It goes into our subconscious/unconscious. Here are some examples of how I think these energies manifest in our unconscious.

Uranus represents nonconformity, breaking tradition and progress. Have you ever wondered why things that are different from what is the norm in society is considered weird and rarely anybody questions it? They just go along with it and rarely anybody asks why this “weird” thing is even so bad in the first place. We don’t think about it because it’s part of our unconscious mind.

Neptune represents our spiritual side as well as illusions. Not many of us think about that either. We just grow up in whatever religion we grow up in and we adopt those morals (or lack thereof) and we don’t even bother to question “Wait is this really true? How do I know?”

Pluto represents transformation and death. We all go through periods in our lives where our old self “dies” and a new self is reborn. During that process we don’t think “I am changing into a new person now.” No we just let it happen. We’re not conscious of it. It’s only until years down the line where you say that event you went through made you a different person.

I think astrologers need to stop ignoring these planets. As we progress further through time we shouldn’t be held back by the rigid and restrictive traditions of the past. We should grow with the knowledge we obtain because that knowledge can help us.

There are some very strict Traditional Astrologers who won’t use the outer planets. And that’s fine. Surprisingly, one can do an excellent delineation of a chart without them. Perhaps in part because of their skill with very traditional and complex tools and methods.

But I think many (not all) of those practicing Traditional, or Hellenistic (and other forms) today do incorporate the outers, but carefully. They can, in my opinion, play very significant roles in a chart, but they don’t fit into the sound structure of many traditional astrological tools, such as sign rulership. I don’t happen to think that diminishes them in any way. I read them in a chart, but I’ve found, having spent years in modern, then switching to traditional, that there is more accuracy and more depth in analyzing a chart if we stick to the traditional rulers for understanding the houses and other factors. We’re able to assess house rulers on a whole different level, that can’t be done with the outers. It’s a bit like if we’re given a blueprint for a house in centimeters and meters, we don’t then try build the house using inches and feet. There just are some tools of traditional astrology that require us to use the traditional planets.

We still look at what houses the outers are in, and what aspects they make, especially to personal planets. Anyone who says they are “only” generational must not have them in close aspect to personal planets, and have not paid attention to transits from them. So I consider them very important, but I don’t see any need (and in fact I find it damages the delineation) to force them into a structure that is already solid and structured via an amazing and balanced system. (Think about the Thema Mundi, for one example. The system of dignities and debilities for another. There is far more underlying those than people realize.)

Because Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are generational placements. For example, all millennials have Pluto in Scorpio. Therefore, they don’t tell you much about an individual, except maybe if you consider their aspects to the more personal planets.

My approach towards astrology is empirical. What I give you below is from my experience.

I’ve found that Uranus is noticable for people who have it on asc/desc or mc/ic axes. There is some kind of craziness noticable in these people. Also transits aspecting Uranus are often noticable in my daily life in an unpleasant way, but the influence works for 1 day mostly. In most people however, you could do the reading without Uranus and the result would be the same.

The same goes for Neptune, however, last year I had transit with aspect of transiting Neptune to personal planet going for some longer period and it seemed to f*** with my clear thinking in the area belonging to this personal planet.

For Pluto and all the new inventions coming after discovery of Pluto, imho the effects are mostly made up and I do not look at Pluto at all. I guess modern people, and especially Americans, are obsessed with Scorpio lore, and are making up some personality traits for themselves and others, basing on Pluto.

Is there really astrologers who won’t use outer planets? Wow. Never heard of that before. Is it an American thing? I am from Scandinavia.
In the astrology academy I went too, we were trained to use all planets, including all the dwarfplanets (Ceres, Haumea, Eris, Makemake and Pluto). So I am exited and hopeful that this tendency will spread throughout the culture of Western Astrology, as my experience is that they give us a lot more insight to inner processes and values.

I think the outer planets aren’t as important to your birth chart unless they make aspects to your personal planets. However for studying world events and predicting future events they are VERY important imo. Especially the planets that have longer transits like neptune and pluto.

it’s not that they get ignored, IMO honestly it’s just that they don’t weight on what most people want to know when getting a reading so much bring generational planets, it makes more weight on transits, events, and towards life events

As much as people say that the outer planets are “ignored,” I really never see it. Every astrologer I’ve seen uses the outer planets, and they’re a part of the more popularized branch of astrology. I see tradition ignored more often than I see modern concepts ignored, and it’s usually done to the detriment of astrology.

I’m a proponent of using the outer planets, but let’s not automatically assume that old = bad. Traditions of astrology can still be developed in modern times, and they are.

i don’t feel that astrologers ignore these. outer planets are very important, arguably more important than personal planets, when it comes to transits because they define long periods of our lives and often signify events that change us forever.

they aren’t as important with regard to interpreting a natal, except when in aspect to personal planets and angles. the rest of the time, they define generations rather than individuals.

Would a Mars conjunct Uranus mean someones drive constantly change or does it mean they’re will and ambitions is going to have an effect people
