Hello, I am I beginner witch and I think knowledge is important so I wanted to know why so many people used incense for cleansing? Could I use different elements such as water or fire for cleansing?
I would love to hear other peoples experience with incense and how they use incense and other methods to cleanse. 🙂

Witchcraft: Why is incense used for cleansing? Also is it a fire or air elemental?

I consider incense and smoke to be air and candles to be fire. Using smoke and incense for cleansing is a very old practice that many religions share.
You can certainly use water or fire for cleansing as well if you want. (Please be careful with fire though!) I personally like using sound as well, either through music, bells, or singing bowls. Salt is another good one.

The smoke is supposed to carry your intent of driving out the negative energy/entity. Smoke can move into all the corners and nooks and crannies, so its considered ideal for clearing a space. As is sound. A singing bowl is awesome for this, but I have usually used bells because I don’t have a bowl. I’ve started to use a set of windchimes that have a very clear tone and that resonate for what seems like hours!
For cleansing yourself and smaller items, salted water and moving water are both excellent. I will occasionally take things down to my local river and cleanse them and myself at the same time.
