Forums Forums Mediums An odd confession: I don’t like the word “ghost” (or even “spirit” that much). Isn’t “soul” nicer? Sigh

When I think of the other side, I think of my mom, and she is a soul. The woman who gave life to me, my best friend, one of my closest circle that I love so much. She’s visited me so I know she’s still here (even though I’m not a medium) and she is not a ghost. She is a soul without a body. The word ghost just doesn’t encompass us.

When I visit r/NDE and think about the Near Death Experiences other people have had, they never refer to themselves as ghosts. They’re just themselves, floating, and having different experiences of reality. So it must be similar for our loved ones. They still feel like themselves, right?

Anyway, I just had to say that. Just wanted to recognize consciousness in a deeper and more encompassing way.

    Signed,
    A grieving daughter

(Ps. Thank you for being a kind group, I really appreciate this little corner as a haven on the Internet.)

I feel the same way about my mother who passed away. I still feel her…and even though my 9 year old daughter never met her (I lost my mother when I was pregnant) I feel she knows my mother as well. In fact…to celebrate her life we do a “girl’s vacation” every year to celebrate my passed mother’s birthday – we remember her spirit and the love she created and passed on to us. She is no ghost. She is alive…and close…we just can’t see her ♥️

I consider those to mean different things. “Spirit” is just a general word for non-corporeal entities which can include anything from fairies, to elementals, to djinn. “Soul” is the specific part to a living being that animates it. And “ghost” is just a catchall term for paranormal activity which may or may not and likely not a spirit of some kind.

I use the term ghost specifically to refer to an earth-bound spirit

I like soul for those who are human. Spirit fits those that are not human.

I refer to ghosts, spirits or souls interchangeably depending on the person I’m talking to and the type of conversation. Personally, I prefer spirit or soul.

I associate ghosts with hauntings – they could be earth-bound spirits who haven’t passed over, but more likely to be energetic recordings from emotionally charged events that keep playing over and over. I’ve never heard anyone refer to a loved one who has passed over as a ghost.

Edit: My condolences to you ❤️ Yes, I think those who cross to the other side still feel like themselves. When I’ve had contact with my dad through mediums, he certainly does.

    100%
    I hate “ghost”.
I don’t have a problem with spirits. Soul is great too ❤️

Ghost is for TV and all that crap. Spirit is the soul while we´re incarnated and soul is when we pass, no physical body involved. Tbh, other than ghost, which is stupid, I personally don´t think the denomination matters.

A lovely lady named Esther Hicks channels a group of what we would call spirit guides that choose to go by the name Abraham, they speak of not liking those title either and that they prefer non physical friends. In this case non-physical mom?, or just mom.

I kind of dislike ghost as well. It is one of those words which has been overused by everyone, esp movies and other media to get a certain reaction. It gives off a negative feeling in so many cases that I am leery of calling something benign a “ghost”

I prefer “spooky friends” or “people who died”, i can’t stand the word ghost bc it’s so impersonal. I also use the word spirit to differentiate from specific people who died- more for the collective unseeable, divine, or other unknowns that I don’t really have words for haha.

I believe “ghost” and soul are for the most part the same, basically souls with no physical body though I wouldn’t be surprised if not all “ghosts” are well human souls as in other spiritual entities
