Assuming I can’t jump into tarot cause I’m new to all this, what are some good tips to get me prepared for tarot later on?

    Tea’s Tarot Take:

Don’t worry too much about the tradition that says you have to be gifted your first deck. It comes from a time before mass production where the major ways to get a deck were to make one, commission one, or be gifted one.

You can definitely buy your own deck, and if you want to nod to that tradition— you can get a deck from Kickstarter or buy one of Etsy from the artist as a modern variation on commissioning a deck. You can also make your own, but speaking from experience— it’s a lot of work.

Cleanse/bless/consecrate your deck in a way that makes sense to you.

Get a notebook and a pen.

Every morning, draw a card and make some notes about your impression of the card.

Go through your day and at the end of the day, write down any event or impression that resonated with the card. It should take about three months to get though the deck if you’re pretty consistent.

There are three main types of tarot deck: Rider-Waite Smith, Thoth, and Visconti-Sforza.

I recommend starting with a RWS based deck. They tend to have rich imagery that can be useful when you’re starting out. Thoth Tarot requires a bit of Thelemic background to understand some of the changes Crowley made. The Visconti-Sforza has a minor arcana which is limited to the pips. There isn’t much symbolism to interpret, but if you have a working understanding of number symbolism or The Path of Ascension on the Tree of Life, you can get by.

Best of luck on your journey. You can also check out r/tarot for tips

Also, there are a lot of beautiful, affordable tarot decks on Etsy with different themes. Buy one that speaks to you and makes you feel excited!

Why can’t you? Did somebody say you can’t?

Best way to learn tarot is to get a deck, spend time looking at each symbol and look at what it’s telling you. Every deck comes with a booklet.

But other books about tarot and check out sites like biddytarot.com.

    Read The Fool’s Journey.

I started tarot because a women gave me a deck while I was travelling, and without a guide in started reading right away using the symbolism. There is no right way, there is no mandatory waiting period, there are no cosmic tarot police.

I started out in tarot, actually. Its something you can pick up whenever. I predicted Trump three years before the election(everyone thought I was stupid) on my fifth reading. Just remember; tarot is subjective, not objective. The cards have meanings, and you should study and memorize them, but they are generalities and are flexible as such. Trust the cards, and don’t *look* for meanings, let’s the meaning come to you. Your first couple readings, you’re going to want to keep close to the “rules”, but you’ll get over that pretty quick.

Jump into it. Divination is such an important skill set for more advanced stuff, the sooner you get into it the better! Divination is how you check your work!

Just get a deck with a good guide book, (I personally like [Everyday Witch Tarot](https://www.llewellyn.com/product.php?ean=9780738746340) by Deborah Blake, and Elizabeth Alba!

Read through the guide, and then just sit with the cards, study them, learn them, and practice doing readings. Start simple, and work your way up to the vaunted Celtic cross.

Tarot itself is an “Easy” practice, but it takes a while to master simply due to the fact that you gotta learn the subtilties of 78 different cards, and then practice and hone intuition to feel out and connect the cards in a spread to figure out the narrative they are trying to say. There is a lot going on, but just practice, practice, practice, and you will be reading cards in no time, and before long you will have multiple decks and walking into a store that sells decks will become an exercise in willpower! :-p
