So could the planet come through more strongly than the actual sign? So Venus in the 1st in Capricorn might come across more like Venus than like Capricorn, or Mars in Gemini might come across more like Mars than Gemini etc.

Nothing in a chart is an isolate, all things are interactive, and yes a planet in the first may have more than normal strength based on the rest of the structure of the chart

Also remember the ascendant is a point of power, like the sun moon or MC, how close the planet is to th e ASC matters,

A conj planet would carry more weight, than a planet at the end of the first house

I know several people with either sun in 1st or sun conjunct ascendant. God they’re way more leo/self-focused (and even selfish) than whatever sign they had as ascendant.

Met a sag rising once with saturn in the first… they were the least adventurous person you can imagine. So I guess with saturn, yes.

Well it’s directly plugging that planet into the “mainframe” of your chart and it will direct the energy of that planet towards the self. That will change the dynamics of the 1st house and modify it, making it different to an empty 1st house with the same sign on the Ascendant.

So Sun in the 1st would direct the Suns energy towards the self, leading to greater self-authority and self-confidence than would otherwise be there. Moon directed towards the self would lead to greater self-reflection and attunement to the internal. Jupiter directed towards the self would lead to greater self-belief and self-discovery. They would also add their negative traits however, such as the egocentrism of the Sun, the sensitivity of the Moon and the self-righteousness of Jupiter.

I have a late degree Pisces rising but also Saturn in Aries in my 1st house and would say the Saturnian is more apparent

I’m a Capricorn ascendant with a Jupiter ascendant conjunction in the 1st house along with moon, Neptune and Uranus. I apparently come off as aloof, adventurous, spontaneous and dreamy more than anything to others. The only Capricorn thing left is often the stoic face I have when I’m out I think.

I am gemini Rising with saturn in 1st house and i am the person you won’t expect to be social, great at conversation, easy going, free, two faced. I actually intimidate people because sat rules my 8th house. So yeah sat does influence a lot.

I’m an Aries Mars in 1H and a Pisces rising.

They seem to trade off who’s in charge on a regular basis.

Some days are incredibly nebulous thanks to Neptune. Others are all action, action, action. It’s like biorhythms.

It depends on the planet and sign. For example mercury won’t overpower a Scorpio rising, but Pluto would with a Cancer rising. I have seen a list online somewhere which rising signs are more potent than others I just can’t remember where as it was a long time ago.

I’ve been wondering this too, I have a cancer rising but my leo moon is in the first house. Any insight?

I wouldn’t word it as “overpower” necessarily but The Planet in the 1st house is very relevant and will make itself known in the forefront of a persons life and personality. I have Pluto directly conjunct my rising in Sagittarius and although I have an outwardly friendly Sag attitude, there is an unmistakable dark Plutonian vibe not to mention I am constantly going through transformations and drastically changing my physical appearance. The Planet in 1st house is still acting through the sign it is in so a Cap rising is still a Cap rising it’s just a more Venusian Cap rising

No. There’s no arm wrestling in astrology. No one overpowers- but some aspects can definitely be more apparent then others.

But energy can become amplified by nearby planets- I have for example 1st house Saturn. It’s also opposite my Sun in seventh. So I’m often very contradictory. But I’m actually not!
