The sun. The sun is your soul and who you see yourself as /who you want to be. The rising sign is like a spacesuit you first developed as a child (and will carry through life) in order to cope with life and everything around you.

Several descriptions given already for the ascendant, but here’s one more: if you view the world through filtered glasses, your ascendant describes the type of filter you see life/the world/even yourself as. This is why two people can experience similar events yet view life so differently with different perspectives.

As a libra, I’m whatever sun sign you say I am (pop astrology joke, sorry).
Basically what everyone else has said, but also be aware of what house your sun is in if you’re having a hard time identifying its presence in your life

Someone I heard put it like this – the ascendant is how you appear, the Sun is how you are. I’ve found that to be true.

I mean both? Our ego is just how we define ourselves, the narratives we create about who we are. Elements from both our sun and rising will contribute to the beliefs that form our ego.

Sun sign is the ego, the self, the wants and desires. The ideals you hold yourself to.
Moon sign is the emotional core, the needs, the ways you are without choice.
Ascendant is the mask, the most external expression of self that is neither so true as to be vulnerable to the unknown, nor so false as to be a lie. It is what strategies you see as best leading to that which you want and need. -
Your sun sign ☺️ Think if it like the rising sign is the backround of your whole life, it sets the stage of what signs are going to rule what house for you! The sun though, that is your ego, your outward personality 💘

The Sun is your ego. I think a lot of people don’t understand what “ego” means, it’s essentially your perception of yourself. Which may or may not be an accurate reflection of your “true” nature, so your Sun isn’t necessarily more or less of your “essence” than any other placement.
The Ascendant is the part of yourself that you present to the world. I like to think of it as the “front door” as not only does it represent your exterior facade, but it is also the door through which everything else in your chart must pass because it creates the structure of your chart (houses – which are honestly much more important in making your chart uniquely yours than your signs) and imbues the rest of the chart with its “flavor” through the chart ruler. It is also the “access point” for other people to get to know you, your Ascendant represents the parts of you that people first interact with. I do not like the word “mask” very much in reference to the Ascendant as it implies something you wear and can take off, and therefore isn’t really a “part” of you the way your other placements are which isn’t true. It also is not the way people perceive you, how people perceive you depends on their relationship to you but when it comes to strangers/acquaintances, that’s actually more of your Midheaven which dictates your reputation and public perception. As I said, it’s how you present yourself to other people, the way that you want others to see you.
