After much thinking and discussion, the mod team has decided to make an adjustment to our rule concerning artwork. We know this is one of the most contentious topics on the sub and hope the change will be helpful for everyone involved.

Artwork will now be permitted only once per month per user. The previous rule was once a week. While we strive to provide a place for lovers of tarot to share their tarot-related imagery, this is not meant to be a repository for pictures. We strive to provide a place for discussion – whether that be from newer users learning more about tarot or seasoned veterans sharing their insight. There are plenty of other places on the internet to look at pictures.

To all those artists who push the limits of the rules without participating in any other way: this simply is not the place to promote your name, your brand, your idea, your artwork, your clothing, your paintings, your cards, or anything else. It does not matter if you have not printed the deck. If you have posted a new card from it every week, you have been promoting. Anyone who now posts artwork from their deck (or any other product, digital or otherwise) every month will have their posts removed and runs the risk of a ban. The promotional megathread exists for promotional content.

Users who wish to look at tarot artwork and are not interested in conversation are welcome to check out /r/tarot_art , a new sub. We are not affiliated with this sub, other than inspiring users who run afoul of our rules to make their own sub, but we do hope it helps fill the void.

The bottom line is that we will always put the needs of the sub above the needs of individual users. Any time we have sought feedback about the sub, the volume of art posts is brought up. We hope shortening the time frame available for these posts will help, but are always open to other ideas and suggestions. We want the sub to continue to grow and be a wonderful resource for learning.

Totally agree, this was starting to become the “I drew (major arcana) card” subreddit. Which is cool and all, but not what I follow the subreddit for, and those seemed like the only posts to get upvoted.

Imho a good choice. I like the creativity as anyone, but they primary purpose of tarot is not to be beautiful

I am grateful for both the new sub as I love art, and the dedication towards maintaining a conversation about the art of doing tarot. Thanks!

Such a wonderful decision. I was getting sick and tired of only seeing artwork and decks. It made me not want to visit the sun anymore.

I’m curious about what does “promoting” a deck mean exactly? If one has bought a new deck and loves the art, is it acceptable to post a reading and also gush about how beautiful the deck is?

While I do appreciate the effort to keep a tide of “buy my deck” or “I drew the high priestess” posts at bay, I personally also really do love finding out about pretty decks and seeing the art. There’s so many decks out there nowadays and tarot community has been my main method of hearing about beautiful indie decks I’d have otherwise completely missed, and I’m still on the hunt for that elusive perfect deck. So in a way people mentioning that such and such deck exists and looks like this is a significant part of my tarot community hopes, even though some might think it’s superficial.

I hope a balance can be found! At the very least, I wish a clear definition of what is considered promotion and what’s just talking about a deck you like would be posted somewhere in the rules, for dense ESL people like me šŸ˜€

I really appreciate how the mods are ever striving to improve the sub.

Although I agree with the rule change, I still love to see the updates of some peopleā€™s decks! I noticed in rule #1 that there are promotional threads and a deck showcase thread. Were there any talks about those being more frequent like weekly or bi weekly basis? Or are those going to be the general threads? I just worry about people not posting their art in them if they cannot be found.

This is positive. Over the years Tarot/spirituality/ā€œsmudgingā€/Reiki, etc. has become unpleasant for me to read about online. Whereas in times past, I enjoyed it. So much in-your-face pushing readers to consume.

Thereā€™s so many webinars/customers enthusiastic praisingā€”and an overwhelming amount of people creating Tarot decks who had their ā€œawakeningā€ last fall.

I quit collecting years ago because itā€™s sensory overload for no good reason. Iā€™m glad thereā€™s an appropriate forum for that type of thing, though.

as an artist myself, I think this is a great idea. I joined this sub to learn about Tarot as I became very interested in it last year. it seems that all that gets posted here though is tarot art, which I enjoy to see. it does, however, feel like the practice itself never ends up getting talked about so ive yet to have learned much from actual posts. im looking forward to this change and I hope those people who were posting their tarot art, join that subreddit

Good good, I hope you are diligent with this change however. I almost certain that several “look at my new cool deck” or similar posts, and that deck being certain popular deck it’s been veiled promotion.
