I recently “interviewed” for a guest spot in another town (I’m a tattooer).

The rates and everything sounded good but in getting to know the owner he kept making more and more derisive comments about “those new shops full of new tattooers, you know the ones, they’re all female, all gay, all woo woo spiritual. They think they can completely disregard the way tattooing has always worked.”

I was all like “oh, like which shops?”🤔
Needless to say I’ve already contacted those other shops, it’s a good sign when the old timers are talking shit about you.

*Edit* For all those asking how to find witchy shops, I wish I could help more, I’ve been in the industry for a decade and I still just Google and read artist bios to try to find places.

For those asking how to work with me, as per the subreddit rules I won’t be promoting myself here, thanks for your interest and support though ❤️❤️❤️

Ah yes, the good ole days of intimidating male tattooers with their heavy hands, sexual harassment, hazing and abuse. (Lady tattooer here too.) The amount of times I’ve been told I’m so lucky bc my mentor didn’t straight up mentally traumatize me during my apprenticeship is astonishing. Most of my first time clients are like “wow, you’re so nice and friendly and open, what a difference from my last experience!” The game is changing, we are the future of tattooing, ladies.

wtf does that even mean? “the way it always worked?” you mean accessible only to men? ah yes, the good old days when discrimination was acceptable.

He even started in on a tirade about how he didn’t approve of/understand/see a place for ritualistic tattooing and I 100% pumped the breaks and let him know in no uncertain terms that some of the most beautiful moments of my life was while performing ritual with a client while tattooing and he needed to stay in his lane.

Tbh I would feel much safer at a shop with lgbt tattoo artists.

There really needs to be an “All female, all gay, all woo woo spiritual” tattoo artist list so we can all find them

What state do you live in? I’ve been looking for tattoo shops in my area, and it would be nice to go to one of those “gay, woo woo spiritual” tattoo shops lol

My tattooist is Puerto Rican and the only way he could get taught was by a black tattooist. So then I come in (tiny Scottish lady) wanting my spiritual tattoos and he has never been more excited.

Some people just shouldn’t be tattooists. If you find a place where everyone is respected it’s a good shop.

Haha traditional tattoo culture is so toxic, I for one am super grateful for these “new” shops and for my spiritual non-binary regular artist! Hope you find a place whose culture jives with you!

“the way tattooing has always worked” you mean by being on the outskirts of society and considered very taboo and people judged you by your look? Lol how can he be so obtuse??

Tattoos have historically been spiritual for many different cultures. And many cultures had praised and veneered women for being more connected to spirituality. He sounds used to colonizer views of life made to cater to him, and is therefor completely unqualified to actually be a tattooist imo.

    > They think they can completely disregard the way tattooing has always worked.

Aren’t we disregarding how tattooing has always worked when we sanitize the workstation, use electricity, and follow modern health and safety standards based on the germ theory of disease?
