My (49) wife (37) is considering sterilization. Just went to a new DR (nurse practitioner) to discuss IUD removal and other options. I was so very happy she was not even asked about my opinion. She was not asked how many children she already has (0), not asked to take a mental health test, nothing not medically necessary. Maybe some things are getting better? Anyway, hope y’all have a good day too.

Yea, any doc worth their salt knows its not great for a woman to birth a child at 37…

It’s honestly no surprise. She’s 3 years away from any pregnancy being considered high risk.

Plus from the sounds of it op was in the room with their wife when this happened. If that’s the case the doctor probably assumed op knew and didn’t mind. Just being present and not saying anything can be seen as consent.

    Good for her.

But alls I’m saying is it’s no surprise when any pregnancy she would have would be considered a geriatric pregnancy that they have no problem sterilizing her. If she was 22 the conversation would have likely gone a completely different way.

Nurse practitioners are not doctors. They do not have medical degrees and do not go through medical school. If you make the choice to see someone with a lower education level that’s fine, but do not equate them with doctors.

This is amazing! I have an OB-GYN in Texas that also didn’t ask for my partners opinion on the whole thing. (Tubes tied after baby 3, then hysterectomy 4 months later) I did take my partners feelings into consideration though.

Man, that’s lucky. When I wanted my tubes tied I was not only denied but completely belittled. I am probably old enough now, but my insurance is somehow even more shit than when I was young. No way I can afford it, and honestly I’m fucking pissed. But very happy for you and your wife, hope everything goes well.

This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing a good experience story. Good to hear there are still professional healthcare workers out there. Give them a good review if you have the time.

Out of all the things women deal with, this racks me more than anything. This is America, when a mentally stable adult wants to do something legal, there should be nothing further to know.

It really shows that our society naturally wants to control women

Offering a different perspective- why didn’t you consider/offer to get a vasectomy? Much less invasive, right? Burden of preventing kids is on you as the man and not still on the woman (patriarchy still at play when she had to get sterilized, despite everyone being cool with it). Total disruption of the paradigm would entail the man taking responsibility and physically altering his body as part of the process, I think.

Believe it or not, men can be just as hampered as women over these decisions. Our insurance will not cover a vasectomy unless the man has 1) three children; 2) is 27 years of age; or 3) a combination of these conditions. It really sucks we have to fight for our reproductive rights when it’s no one else’s business.

I mention this every time it comes up, but I dated a woman in the 90s that had gotten tubal ligation in her 20s with no kids. (Of course it took four or five doctors to find one)

Dude I straight up play dumb as he’ll when my wife and I are shopping if someone trues to ask me what she wants. Then I make a point to ask them why they thought I would be rude enough to speak for her. They get uncomfortable real quick lol

My ob/gyn never asked me about kids. I told her at the time my daughter was 18 and if I was going to have more kids then I would have by then. She gave me all the options on how to remove the tumors. I said I just want the full hysterectomy I already knew what I wanted before I went to see her. She said ok we can do that. Iowa makes you wait 30 days after signing the papers and the spouse must sign to consent if the woman is married. When she asked me about my marital status I said jokingly does my cat count. I am divorced so I was fine.
